So for a while now I've seen a lot of people arguing about the game The Legendary Starfy. Some people think its a Kirby rip-off while others argue they're nothing alike. Curiosity got the better of me and I finally decided to buy the game and see for myself. I've now finished the game(in 2 days, lol) and will share what I think, first by comparing it to the Kirby games and also how it stands on its own(which is going to be spoilerific, so if you plan on getting the game and don't want to know what happens go no further).
Alright, so first off I'll go over why people think its a Kirby rip-off. I thought it was a Kirby rip-off too at first because of how the game is presented, but I see it very differently now. The main character of the game is Starfy, a starfish prince that has a face exactly like Kirby that says "IMMA EAT YOUR SOUL BETCH".
[link] He can transform into various animals with special powers and for some reason he cannot speak a word aside from a series of meeping noises. The game itself is also extremely easy since its catered towards children and beginner players(in other words if you suck at this game you fail at video games period), which is a lot like the Kirby games. Even the cover design is similar to KSSU's cover. The biggest similarity of all is the sheer amount of unnecessary vore going on in the game(its a plot point).
However, it turns out the game is nothing like a Kirby game. First of all it has an actual plot, and a pretty good one at that complete with diabetes inducing morals. Kirby games don't have this. As much as I love Kirby, you don't play those games for plot. Ever. Then there's Starfy's abilities. He has a much wider range of natural abilities than Kirby does, making him far less useless than Kirby when he doesn't have a special ability. His main attack is a spin attack that gets better as the game progresses. He can also do a double jump, he can glide, his running animation is hilarious, he can swim faster than Kirby, and he can do a nifty shooting star trick.
Well, what about the transformations? That's a lot like Kirby right? Actually no. I was really surprised but they decided to go in a slightly more horrifying direction than just eating people and stealing their power. Its not clear exactly what happens during transformation, but considering what the end result looks like...
[link]Essentially, from what I understood, Starfy's little alien bunny friend Bunston eats him and they merge in body, mind, soul and some other mindfucking. Commence the kicking of asses.
They have 4 forms in all: a fire breathing dragon that is just too darn cute when it runs, a seal that shoots an ice...rocket...thing out of its ass and constantly makes nauseatingly cute noises, a chicken that sticks out its xenomorph-esque tongue that looks like two miniature chickens and kills everything with sound waves, and a ghost that spews explosive purple fireballs and can transform into a sparkle for a few seconds to get through obstacles. No I'm serious. Clearly, that's nothing like Kirby's powers. There's also the fact that you rarely even get to use these powers. The only time you use them is when there's a specific need for it, which clearly means Bunston is a lazy little asshole that prefers to let Starfy do everything for him.
Now how good is game really? Well, I enjoyed it for one thing, which should say a lot. The game play is fun and the worlds are varied enough to keep you interested. I particularly enjoyed the oldschool feel of many of the areas. Stuff like the area where you ride around in mine cars and the whole ghost ship world remind me a lot of old super nintendo games. The graphics are very colourful and there's tons of characters to interact with throughout the game. The bosses tend to be pretty unique and there's even a squid monster with tentacle rape action(not literally, but he sure loves to kidnap people with them). So if you're up for a cute and easy game, Starfy is worth going for.
SPOILERIFIC TIMEAnd now for the plot. Its a really cool concept enough for me to want to go over it, but man did they ever make it annoying with the rampant cliches and the redundancy of Starfy and his clam friend Moe. They don't NEED to be in the story, because its not even about them. Its about Bunston. They just wanted an excuse to use an ocean theme, because everybody wants to be a goddamn marine biologist. In a nutshell, Bunston is the prince of a shapeshifting alien bunny race on the planet Bunnera when a space pirate(I shit you not) named Mashtooth(who's kinda like a purple Bowser but without the awesome and more stupid) gets wind of their power and decides he wants the power for himself. Bunnicide ensues(apparently he eats them and spits them back up without their powers, lets not think about that too much). He gets every single Bunneran's power except for Bunston (because adults are infinitely stupid and weak in this game), who happens to have the most power of all. Bunston escapes, gets shot down, and crashes into the castle of Pufftop where Starfy lives. He gets a bad case of amnesia and they wind up searching for shards of what happen to be his ship. On the way they get harassed by a trio that are a living pun of the game rock, paper, scissors who later discover being evil is not very nice. Really. Bunston gets his memory back, they fly off to stop Mashtooth, Mashtooth fucking eats Bunston and turns into a huge dragon(while giving us some lovely shots of a still alive Bunston inside Mashtooth, that really didn't need to happen), some crap about the power of friendship, Starfy kicks his ass with a planet, the end.
